Validating vs. Dismissing: One of the Most Valuable Communication Skills Out There!
Here’s a communication skill: How to validate other people’s feelings in order to create better relationships and connection!
When we don’t feel validated, some of our attention will be stuck elsewhere — outside the conversation. Avoid this trap by validating the emotions of the person you’re speaking with. Ask yourself, what are they going through? Are they upset, anxious, indifferent? Frustrated? Underwhelmed? Totally stoked?!
Practice this emotional intelligence skill in your conversations. Try to name the emotion that this person is dealing with. Create an empty space — a clearing — within which this person can speak openly. It’s the best way to create real connection with people in your workplace, friend group, romantic relationships, and so on.
